La mala imagen en el Wolfsburgo le deja en entredicho

Real Madrid return to the Santiago Bernabéu this Saturday after the debacle in Wolfsburg in the Champions League on Wednesday. They will not only be facing Eibar, but also their own fans, who need to see their side give a better image in this game, one that will give them realistic hopes for a great comeback next Tuesday.

Zinedine Zidane needs to shake things up to feel safe in his job and to stop any talk of a wasted season over the next few days at the club. With Real Madrid’s poor showing in Germany, a hefty chunk of the good standing the Frenchman had built up over these months on the bench has evaporated. ‘Zizou’ spoke once again about the lack of attitude and intensity from his players and it is the third time he has had to do it since he took over in January. The first time was after the derby defeat at the hands of Atlético de Madrid and the next was in Las Palmas, despite the team winning.

Florentino Pérez still has faith in Zidane, but the European defeat has raised concerns within the club as the understanding is that this is something that just cannot happen again. If the season comes to a close in a normal fashion, with no shocks, the club will stick with Zidane and work on the planning for next season with him. However, if the exit from the Champions League comes on Tuesday, Real Madrid’s hot seat is likely to have a different occupant next season.

The first stage on this change of course must come on Saturday. Neither the players nor Zidane can allow themselves another slip-up and, although the league title is a pipe-dream and the season’s success or not depends on Europe, the domestic competition cannot be ignored. ‘Zizou’ may rest some players ahead of the return leg against Wolfsburg, but, whoever plays against Eibar, Madrid must lay the foundation stone of the big comeback that they so desire.
