Cádiz CF, after an urgent board meeting, have decided to lodge an official complaint owing to Real Madrid’s fielding of Denis Cheryshev, who was ineligible for the Blancos, in last night’s Copa del Rey tie in the Andalusian city. The club president, Manuel Vizcaíno said: “The board has met and decided to report Real Madrid for fielding an ineligible player, out of respect for our fans and the club.”

Vizcaino admitted that they were taking this action with a heavy heart, because of the friendly relationship that the two clubs enjoy, but that they had no other option. He added that he would be in contact with the Real Madrid board and that it will be for the Federation to decide. “For us it is clear that this is a case of Madrid fielding an ineligible player. These are difficult decisions to take owing to the significance they have. Madrid are the greatest club in the world and I admire them greatly.”

Official Statement

Cádiz have officially confirmed that they are lodging a complaint via a statement on their web page:

“Cadiz CF have presented in the last few hours before the RFEF [Spanish Football Federation], a written complaint of alleged improper alignment of the football player Denis Cheryshev, as agreed unanimously at an extraordinary meeting of the board of directors.

This morning we have received communication from the RFEF that the letter has been received and they have given a deadline to Real Madrid to present the arguments they deem appropriate. We have also received numerous different reports confirming that RFEF regulations were infringed.

The club reiterates its utmost respect for Real Madrid and will not make any further statements until there is an announcement from the Competition Committee, who will dictate the magnitude of what happened.”
