Benítez fields ineligible Cheryshev against Cádiz in Copa del Rey tie and Madrid could be disqualified

Madrid’s latest cock-up

cadiz-cheryshev

Real Madrid’s latest cock-up occurred at the Ramón de Carranza. Benítez’s side comfortably won the first leg of their Copa del Rey tie against Cádiz but committed a schoolboy error. The Blancos fielded Cheryshev, who was carrying a one-match ban carried over from last season when he was playing for Villarreal against Barcelona in the same tournament. The news came out while the first half of the game was being played.

The outcry was immediate, and noisy. Nobody at Real Madrid knew of the oversight and they were therefore unaware that they had committed an infringement, now they have to await their opponents’ decision on how to proceed. In view of the situation, the game itself had by that time become secondary. The face of the Madrid top brass was a picture. Nobody could believe what was happening. To top it all, Cheryshev had scored the Blancos’ first goal.

Mobile phones swung into action and to the chagrin of the Madridistas it was confirmed that the player was indeed supposed to be serving a ban owing to having accumulated three yellow cards with Villarreal. The player came out for the second half but was immediately replaced once the hotline had communicated the news.

In the stands, the news spread like wildfire and the well-known Cádiz sense of humour turned it into a carnival-style chirigota of chants and jokes. From then on the social networks took over and even Barcelona player Gerard Piqué, in his own inimitable way, joined in.

Cádiz now have until 2pm on Thursday to report the situation and the authorities will have to meet, decide on, and hand down any sanctions proceeding from this Copa del Rey tie.
