Raúl hangs up his boots with the NASL champions title after Cosmos beat Ottawa Fury 3-2

A send-off fit for a champion

Raúl

Raúl bids farewell to football in the same way that he began: winning. The legendary Spanish player now hangs up his boots after winning the North American Soccer League final, thanks to a hat-trick by the former Celta player Cellerino. New York Cosmos built up an unassailable 3-1 lead over Ottawa Fury, with the ‘number 7’ playing a leading role: he provided the pass for two of the threee goals.

Cosmos went ahead after just eight minutes, when Cellerino darted between two defenders and slotted an eight-yard shot into an open net as the goalkeeper was taking him down. In the second half, however, Ottawa levelled through Heinemann just after they had gone a man down owing to the sending-off of Trafford. Barely a minute later, Cellerino scored once again to make it 2-1 and then completed his hat-trick five minutes from time when he latched on to a long pass from Raúl and raced down the wing before finishing from 16 yards. Heinemann, again, in the 92nd, scored for Ottowa to give the final minutes some excitement but the score did not change after that.

Raúl and Marcos Senna therefore say their final ‘adiós’ to the world of professional football before taking on new challenges, most likely involved with the game, but no longer as players.
