Odegaard ‘runs away’ from Zidane

Martin Odegaard was signed by means of the same strategy that Real Madrid have been using to capture young talents. A succulent contract (more than €1 million a year to play for the B team) and the promise of being moved up to the first team once they have adapted to the club. A script that is written on offical notepaper so that there can be no misunderstandings in the future.

The 16-year-old Norwegian did not fit into Zinedine Zidane’s project at Castilla. Last season there were all sorts of rumours going around about the relationship between the coach and the player. Some even said that it was non-existent. In truth, there was a bit of everything. Substitutions, dubious states of fitness, injuries, a music hall variety show that seemed to have finished when Odegaard embarked on the plane to take part in the Asian tour with the first team.

That was some days ago and right now the situation does not look good for the young Norwegian. He only played for 45 minutes in the friendly matches, specifically the first half in the game against Roma, and nobody is asking when he is next going to appear. His coach, Rafa Benítez, does not have the time to think of how and where he can make a space for him in the side as he has the same problem to worry about concerning Isco, James, Jesé and Benzema, all of whom are the finished product and much more important for the team.

With things being the way they are, the future does not look too bright for young Martin. At the club they are considering the option of making him spend another season playing for Castilla, in 2ª B (the third tier), under Zidane, which the player is not very happy about. The other option is to go out on loan, something that was not originally foreseen, but which could be the solution if the his relationship with the French coach continues the way it has been.
