Top of the group and with more than a foot in the door of the next stage of the Champions League. Real Madrid had few problems in passing the Malmö test. The starting line-up had many absences owing to injuries but this was no real handicap since the hosts simply huffed and puffed but had little football to offer. Benítez’s side got it wrong at times in the first half when they tried too hard to reach their opponents’ goal with too quickly with too many long balls when what they needed was to play it around more and look for gaps to then make the first hammer blow.

This did not come until the half-hour mark, when Madrid caught their opponents on the break. With just three passes, Cristiano Ronaldo suddenly found himself face to face with the goalkeeper, and on this occasion he did not miss. This goal left him just one shy of equalling Raúl’s legendary tally.

The strike knocked Malmö out of their stride and they barely bothered Keylor Navas, instead were at Madrid’s mercy for a long spell. Benzema became a nightmare for the Swedish defence, though for all his good work in attack he did not find the right strike partner to provide the knockout punch.

Madrid went to sleep in the second half and were lulled into a false sense of security by the ease of the game and the lead, though it was never really threatened. Despite this collective slothfulness Cristiano Ronaldo showed sufficient determination to double the Blancos’ lead and with that goal, finally, to reach Raúl’s record as all-time scorer for Real Madrid.
