A complaint filed by a linesman that spoke of pressure that had been placed on him to be prejudicial to the interests of Barcelona in next month’s ‘clásico’ has rocked Spanish football. The FC Barcelona board consider that “an in-depth investigation of the case is necessary and hope that, for the good of the prestige and credibility of the Liga de Fútbol Profesional (Professional Football League), it is all a misunderstanding.”

Miguel Cardenal, the president of the High Council for Sport (CSD in its Spanish initials) has issued a statement couched in similar terms, seeing it as an “extremely grave complaint, it is extraordinarily alarming. What must be done in the face of such an accusation is to clarify it as soon as possible and take the necessary measures if appropriate. I would like the Football Association to clarify the accusation immediately .”

Javier Tebas, the president of the LFP, however, does not see there being much truth in the complaint. “The complaint seems a little implausible. It makes no sense and there is no procedure to be followed as the officials have not yet been appointed for the Real Madrid-Barcelona match, nor for any other games that weekend” he told ‘AS‘. “Here there are no leagues prepared for anybody, not by the LFP, nor by the Federation nor anybody else” he had already said in reference to Cholo Simeone’s comments that the league was set up to be won by Real Madrid.

The fourth actor in this controversy, the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (Spanish Football Federation) has yet to take a stand or even issue a statement with their opinion on this question.
