In a feature article on their web page, the French sports daily L’Equipe takes a look at the top strikers that Atlético de Madrid have had on their books in recent years and who have become top stars world-wide. Following the signings of Luciano Vietto and Jackson Martínez, L’Equipe reviews the magical series of strikers who have graced the Calderón since the departure of Christian Vieri and the promotion of Fernando Torres to the first team.

After Torres came ‘Kun Agüero‘, considered to be the ideal successor to ‘El Niño’ and who in Diego Forlán had the perfect strike partner. After the Argentinean and the Uruguayan, the figure of the Colombian Radamel Falcao emerged. ‘El Tigre’, as he was known, thrilled the Calderón with 24 goals in the league and a further 12 in European competition during his first season at Atlético. Diego Costa was not far behind him. Costa had already been at the club when Agüero and Forlán were there but then went out on loan and came back very much the finished article and showed himself to be one of Europe’s top marksmen, firstly under Simeone and, this last season, at Mourinho’s Chelsea.

In their wake now come Griezmann, Vietto and Jackson. Atlético seems to be a dreamland for strikers .
