James Rodríguez was the man of the match for Colombia against Paraguay. It was not just because of the assist he gave or the goal he scored, it was more about the commitment he showed and the soap opera involving the Real Madrid ahead of the Copa América clash. After going off injured in the first game, there were doubts about his recovery all week.
However, James decided to come out and play, and assumed the captaincy of the team. The ‘number 10′ explained it this way: «Look, here I play even if I’m limping. Here I actually do play limping. I always want to play and I’m happy because in the national team I want to help, and today I was able to score and so we continue on the right path.»
James scored a goal that was typical of him, an angled shot from the left and he acknowledged that he had practised it a lot: «I practise shots like this a lot, and I believe that when you practise a lot, in the end they come off in matches.»
José Pékerman, who placed his trust in James, confirmed the good work the attacking midfielder is putting in and said his recovery was complete: «As he is such an important player for the team, we had to be careful, but we never ruled him out. Injuries of this type have certain symptoms. Real Madrid were informed and they are up to date with the situation. He recovered well and tomorrow he will be fine. They knew he was going to play.»
«As for the goal James scored, I have a lot of admiration for what he did. It was a move that could have gone another way and he went and looked for it with commitment to get the ball into the right place and show his quality», added Pékerman about James’ goal.
Carlos Bacca, the former Sevilla player, explained the match perfectly: «Today we were looking to qualify in what we knew was going to be a difficult match against a Paraguay side who never gave the game up for lost. We played well in the first half and we knew how to resist in the second.»
