Holanda Francia, homenaje a Johan Cruyff

France beat Holland in the last minute of a game they had always dominated but that will go down in memory more because of the heartfelt tribute to Johan Cruyff in the 14th minute. The crowd at the Amsterdam Arena -which will be renamed ‘Johan Cruyff Arena’- gave their hero a moving minute of rapturous applause but also booed their own team when they were playing badly.

Holland actually threw away the first half and only really got into gear in the second. France went ahead early on and were leading 2-0 by the time came to stop play in the 14th minute.

The first came from Atlético’s Antoine Griezmann in the sixth minute when he fired home a free kick. A few minutes later Giroud scored, having been set up by Matuidi after a corner. Didier Deschamps’ side were by far the better team in the first 45 and their hosts gave them few problems.

In the second half Holland brought on Ibrahim Afellay and Memphis Depay; meanwhile Deschamps left Griezman, Lassana Diarra and Patrice Evra in the dressing room, replacing them with Lucas Digne, Ngolo Kante and Anthony Martial.

Luuk De Jong scored almost immediately after the re-start and Holland were a different side. This was now another game and the French dropped back, looking to finish it on the break. The Dutch, for all their pressing, did not create very much until five minutes before time when Afellay struck home from the edge of the box to culminate a set piece move from a corner.

Less than two minutes later, though, all the Dutch side’s efforts were undone when Dimitri Payet played in Blaise Matuidi who slotted home and silenced the Amsterdam Arena.
