Bernd Schuster, who played for Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid, and managed the Blancos during the presidency of Ramón Calderón, did not bite his tongue when he spoke about how Real Madrid are being run in general and the sports structure at the club in particular: “I think we all know that Real Madrid do not have a balanced squad and that means they don’t play in a way so as to compete at the highest level. Even Atlético are doing things better. They change one piece for another in the same position. Madrid didn’t do that, and now they are paying the price.”

Schuster was speaking at the Barcelona-Real Madrid Golf and Paddle Tennis challenge at the Real Club de Golf in El Prat, and he also spoke about Saturday’s ‘Clásico’: “It won’t have much bearing on the league table but it should give some indication as to what to expect in the Champions League. Zidane’s lack of experience won’t be a burden for him because he already knows just how special these games are, more than any other. I don’t know how Real Madrid will perform, because I see that they have a lot of highs and lows, so I’m not sure what to expect of them.”

The German was, however, optimistic regarding Cristiano Ronaldo: “Before, he didn’t seem happy but now he looks like he is. Cristiano needs to be comfortable, to know that he is the best… You have to know what players like him are like.” Asked about whether he preferred the ‘MSN’ or the ‘BBC’, Schuster was quick to reply: “At the moment the Barcelona front three are much more convincing. They’re marvellous to watch. In general, Barça have dominated the midfield a lot, Madrid haven’t. The ‘Blancos’ have often looked inferior, and not only against the ‘big’ sides, but also against some of the ‘minnows’. Barcelona’s players are magnificent.”

Schuster did not, however, give up the game as a lost cause for Real Madrid because they can always win a game like this: “I once said that, and nobody understood me, and I got the sack. I’ve explained it many times before. One thing is the plans, quite another is the reality.”
