Esteladas en el Camp Nou

Barcelona have confirmed by means of an official announcement on their website that they are to fight through the courts for the right of their supporters to display the ‘Estelada‘ (the pro Catalonian independence flag) during the Copa del Rey final at the Vicente Calderón Stadium in Madrid on Sunday. The club have filed “an administrative appeal to the Madrid Courts for the protection of fundamental rights and a request for a preliminary injunction to suspend the decision that was announced by the delegate of the Community of Madrid.”

The Blaugrana club argue that the ban represents a “violation of the fundamental right to freedom of expression” and that there are no “grounds for the measure because it presupposes a desire to be offensive with the use of the Estelada flags.” The display of these flags has caused Barcelona more than one headache in the reecent past. They were fined €30,000 for the display of the flags during the 2015 Champions League final in Berlin, and were handed a further €40,000 sanction when it happened again at the Camp Nou this season, during the group stage match against Bayer Leverkusen.
