Mario Balotelli and Chelsea are the favourite Premier League targets for trolling on social networks. These are the findings of a study commissioned by ‘Kick it Out’, the organisation that fights against racism and other forms of discrimination in football. Mourinho’s team are top of the list for discriminatory messages received, with almost 20,000, closely followed by Liverpool, with 19,000. As far as individual players go, Balotelli is easily top of the list. The Italian striker has received over 8,000 abusive messages while his two closest followers, Danny Welbeck and Daniel Sturridge, have ‘only’ been the target of 1,700 and 1,600 respectively. In the case of ‘Balo’, 52% of the messages contained racist content, racism being the type of discrimination that is most prevalent on social networks according to this study.

“This is a huge amount of awful abuse. A lot of it is vile and something needs to be done” said Roisin Wood, the Chief Executive of the organisation. Kick it Out is looking at forming a group made up of representatives of the world of football, social networks and the police to fight jointly against racism, sexism and homophobia in the game.
